Barley Syrup, Barley malt extract and malt extract - aren't they the same thing - i.e. "malted" from barley?

I'd be tempted to do two, one as is and the other hopped etc.

Well, to truly appreciate the highs, you have to experience the lows...

...and its damned nice of you to do the experiencing for the rest of us so we don't have to

That can is certainly bright.. :D

Mind you I don't know if any of you remember this kit...

Mighty Mo....basically the size of a small tin of baked beans, apart from the beans tasted better  came in bitter and lager
Was an extremely popular kit amongst ex-pats due to ease of getting into dry state country's - but I always used to tell them if they were that desperate for booze couldn't they just grab a camel and ask for sample.....seriously this kit was that bad.....if I recall right there was about 250-350g of malt and you still lobbed in a 1kg of sugar and topped off with 40pints...... :-&
cheers & best regards

Must still be an awful lot of ex-pats brewing then, as that must be the only market they have - i see they do a "stout flavour" as well now, how can you have a stout flavour? Tis either stout or it is not.

We did try using 3 tins of this once to make up the size and brewed with 500gms dme and 500gms sugar, still tasted like a throwback from the 60's home brew era.

That was the good fun back then, trying all the different kits even if you knew they were going to be bad :D
cheers & best regards

I am flabbergasted that some of those terrible things are still about.
The wholesalers have learned nothing in 17 years! No wonder home brewing is in decline.

Is Bargain Brew really still about, or is it a piss take? On second thoughts, better not take the piss out of it - it needs all the flavour it can get.

A lot of these own-brand things used to be made for the wholesalers by the company that makes Ovaltine. So, with a bit of milk and a few eggs you could turn it into a bedtime drink and feed it to your kids if all else fails

I remember Mighty Mo. Dead small tin which had to be made with 3lbs of SUGAR. Bet that tastes like absolute s***e!

'Mighty Mo' was truly bad.

I wouldn't say too much if I were you Graham, there was an advert for Vina's Bargain Brew beers covering the inside front cover of my 1990 copy of your 'Home Brewing' book!

Well ! finally....its started...

Last night, I bit the bullet and started on my " Bargain Brew Bitter " kit.

With a kilo of sugar and the kit containing barley sugar this will be interesting.......

Its currently bubbling away slowly but steadily......time will tell ! :D

I made a Bargain Brew Pilsbrau :-s Lager kit, just to use it up, but only made it with 500g of brewing sugar and as a 16 litre brew, rather than the intended 23, IIRC.

It's a little bit wishy-washy, even made as a 16 litre brew, but its not actually unpleasant. I can't see me rushing out to buy more of these though...
