Well, to answer the original question I would say (apart from the fermenter, bottles or keg that you need to brew any beer) you would need:

A 5 gal bucket to mash in,
A 5 gal bucket to sparge in (could be the mash tun),
A 5 gal bucket to hold the hot sparge liquor,
A 5 gal boiler (I suppose you could get away with a 3 gallon pan on top of a cooker, but it would be a pain and you'd have to do more than one boil)
Some plastic tubing to connect things up as neccessary.
Cooling can be done by standing the container of hot wort in a bath of cold water.

(apart, fermenters, bottles and keg); I use:
- a 10 gal bucket to mash in
- a 10 gal bucket to sparge
- a 10 gal bucket to hold the hot sparge liquor, it could be also the boiler
for a 10 gal, it's good to have a magnetic pump to transfer the wort ( hot and heavy).
to cool the beer I've make my heat exchanger with a copper tube inside a garden pipe, it's 10m. I cool the 10 gal. wort in 15mn! :D
my brewery is similar that the Jim's one :P
