mrs chopper turned the central heating on a week or so back, we're off to cyprus next saturday so i think she is getting climatised already, but it sent my lager right down currently 1006!!

If its anything like the orange slurry I made, its bloody awfull.

The heating came on the other night here as well......something to do with Mrs D I think......which brought on a moment of panic in me as the fermenter with my Smugglers is right by the radiator  The rad quckly got turned off though

Seems to me that the southerners are the ones who haven't turned the heating on yet

This seems to be a good place to ask about brewing in winter. The other 1/2 is pretty hardy as she is down at the stables every morning(6.30) and evening so we dont tend to bother with the c/h much, an hour in the morning and a couple of hours in the evening as we're both out all day. So what is the best way to cope with lower temperatures when brewing. :?

As Doug mentioned earlier, wrapping your fermenter in some kind of insulating material helps keep the temperature within from dropping too low. I use an old sleeping bag, or a fleece blanket I got in Ikea for a quid. Remember that the fermenter will also need insulating from the surface it is sitting on if that is going to get cold too (floor tiles, cobbles, sicilian marble - whatever you might have). If you ferment in your house that's probably the most it will need... my problem is stopping it from getting too warm, whatever the time of year

Heres my answer to brewing in winter, so the fermenter(s) will survive in the garage.

http://jimsbeerkit.co.uk/forum/viewtopi ... highlight=
Fermenter(s): Lambic, Wheat beer, Amrillo/Cascade Beer
Cornys: Hobgoblin clone, Four Shades Stout, Wheat Beer, Amarillo/Cascade Ale, Apple Wine, Cider, Damson Wine, Ginger Beer

Blind it was actually quite pallitable. However no word of a lie here.

When I was a computer operator back in the early 80's and doing shifts. I had to look after those big reel to reel computers you now only see in cheesy SCI FI movies.

Anyway again being tight I hadn't gone to the dentist for years so one morning I woke up with a hell of a tooth ache.

On arriving into work one of my duties was to clean the tape heads. Whilst reading doing this I noticed on the bottle that i dipped the buds into that it was pure alcohol. As one would think booze numbs the pain of most things else it would not have been used to such great extent.

Suffice to say after slushing tape head cleaner around my mouth for a week I have a delicate pallette of which I can taste all the subtly neuances that eveyone else can taste (LOL).

That and the years of smoking, hot spicy food and all the other debaucery I have put in my gob have left me lacking in the taste arena.

Basically if I don't hurl it up it's all good.

I must try that some time! I've just dished out some Isopropyl Alcohol this afternoon to one of the techs. here for the very same purpose of cleaning the heads on a magnetic tape recorder.

They are all for blaming the men for wars.

However SWMBO will be the death of us all coz they like their little palaces to be 5 degrees above the right temprature!

I say drink more brew to keep warm and knock the central heating down a tadge that way us Homebrewers are saving the planet!

It's all crystal clear..
