faulty smack pack?

Post by Dan » Sun Sep 30, 2007 12:37 am

I recently bought a wyeast pack of 1028 london ale made jan 2007 bestbeforedec2007 I bought it cold, got it home and put it straight in the fridge for a day.

2 days before brewday I smacked... and waited.. and waited after 24 no swelling :? ive had this before so i went ahead and made up a starter 1L/100g DME boiled cooled to 22C and poured in the yeast and shook the hell out of it.

(incubating at 21C) 6hrs later. nothing. no gas no sediment no bubbles. 12hrs nothing.

anyone had this trouble?

Although the signs aren't encouraging, there's time yet, so don't give up hope (though you may have to delay your brewday  ).

If the smackpack is near it's use by date or hasn't been stored correctly (before you got it, I mean) then it may take 48 hours to get going properly.

I smacked a pack with a best before of Feb '08 - it still took a week to swell.
