Hi Chaps
Did my very first AG brew today ,however not very sucessfully. Sparged with 5gall of 70c water ended up with 2gall of wort which makes it a very expensive pint.To cut things short where did I go wrong.Must get things sorted for next attempt. [img]

I did 3kg Pale malt,250g crystal malt and mashed for 1hr 15 mins.
Sparged with 5gall 0f water at 70c,
Boiled for a total of 90mins (vigorously)
Cooled with chiller and ended up with 2 gallon of wort

Mash tun is a Hop and grape cool box

Can you talk us through what you actually did as cant really answer without more information.

Initial thought is that you over boiled for way too long

Not sure how you managed to only end up with 2 gallons.

Give us some more details - how much mash liquor / grain did you use, what type of mashtun / manifold do you use, how long did you boil for etc etc
Dan!

I'd like to know what happened to the other 3 gallons of sparge liqour, plus the mash liqour! Something very odd happened on the face of it.

Well done for trying your first AG

We all learn, every time we brew, and hopefully don't make the same mistakes again

If you give us a few more details we may be able to sort a few thing out for you

When boiling is it best to simmer rather than vigorously boil or keep topping up the wort

Adda, it sounds like my first AG brew - I also ended up with little wort, so topped up with water and my light ale ended up being the lightest in the world :)

I think my sparging wasn't efficient enough and I also boiled too vigorously. I've got a brand new boiler that is probably too efficient and when I read that the hops must not be stewed but properly boiled, I had the thing raging like Mt Vesuvius on a bad day

I'm going to have another crack this Thursday and hope my second brew is better. I think it's a case of learning as you go - at least I hope so, so have another go.

I'm going to keep notes of all measurements and readings this time so if I have the same problem hopefully someone on here can help pinpoint where I'm going wrong too.

Good luck :)
