What Grain

Post by PieOPah » Thu Sep 14, 2006 10:30 am

Does anybody know what grain CaraPils would come under either in BeerSmith or ProMash?

There is Cara-Pils/Dextrine which I am tempted to use but since the colour is 2, max in batchis 20% and it is classified as a US grain, I doubt this is the correct grain

According to what I have bought, the colour is 3-5, max in batch is 10% and it is a german grain!!

I would add the grain manually but I don't know about all the other info!!!

What units are the two colors in? The German one is most likely EBC and the US on is most likely in Lovibond/SRM (unless you've changed it). EBC works at about twice the Lovibond value so both are about same colour. I suspect the US and German grains are pretty similar so I'd use the US values.

Personally I wouldn't go too mad with carapils as although it is handy for head retention it can make a beer a bit cloying sweet if overused. 10% would be plenty (and even that might be too much).

Thanks Steve.

Got about 7% in my brew. Wouldn't dream of using much more than that anyway!

I have used once before and like the sweetness it gave my beer. This time it will be used in my Christmas Beer so should give it a needed taste :)

I have added the grains keeping pretty much the same values but have changed the max usage to 10%. Will know where to find what I am lookng for now :)

I treat CaraPils just like crystal malt only without the colour and caramel sweetness. My experience is it make a beer 'thick' rather than sweet.

The carapils from the U.S. is , IMO, not worth bothering with, it adds little to the beer. If you use the Brit or Belgian, you will be getting about 20L with it, oh you will need to enter it into Promash yourself, at least the Brit type, because it's not listed. Steve says it is cloying, yeah, but large amounts I have found add a butterscotch flavor to the finished beer, which in competitions is mistaken for Diacetyl, I found out the hard way. I made a historis beer from Old British Beers and How To Make Them and used a large amount of carapils, that's how I found out! :( However, the finished beer wasn't really cloying necessarily though. Anyway, I like to use it in some beers when I'm looking for a lighter type cara malt, giving most of the elements of cara or crystal, without a lot of color. 10% is plenty too.
