Thanks!

How are you controling the boil speed?

So many questions! :D

I had no plans to control the boil speed, but i think a single element should give a nice rolling boil.

Ok :)

I found my 2.4kw ebay tea urn boiler was too fast at rolling boil. Wanted to boil over at the start of the boil very easily. I'd wrapped the outside in the silver insulation bubble wrap and had to take that off to loose some heat.

1 element burnt out so it's rolling just fine now with 20 litres and 1.3kw with the wrap on all the time.

That sounds interesting, i might look into power control in the future, but at the minute this 2.4kw element seems to give a nice rolling boil.

I did my first batch with this boiler today, the element was at about the 10L mark and i was measure the temperature at the top.
I started emptying the strike water out of it into the tun and thought, this doesnt seem likes its too warm ....I felt it and the temperature was no warmer than when i first put it in (the temperature at the top where i measured was 80C, but this coming out was about 30C.
I knew there would be a temperature differential, but i didnt think it would be this great, so i recirculated a few litres and carried on heating.
Eventually got mashed in, and everything went smoothly (80% efficiency, compared to my usual 65 for concentrated batches in a 15L stocpot).

During the boil, the boiler held up fine, had a few drips of water when cold, but after it had heated up these sealed themselves.
I think the vigor of the boil would have prevented such a great difference in temperature as experienced when heating the mash liquor.

All in all it was a very relaxing day being able to brew outside and not worry about making a mess of the kitchen.

when building the mango barrel boiler i read about how the seams could go and thought that mounting the elements a few inches higher might be a good idea..
so my elements are about 4 inches off the bottom
the side effect of this is a dead space or cold spot directly opposite the elements and until a rolling boil is reached which moves the liquid all about this spot stays cold unless a bit of stirring is employed.
its quite mad when almost at the boil the barrel sides are hot to the touch, reach round to the cold spot and its like ice.. a few seconds later when the boil is reached the cold spot disappears!

each brewkit has its own special features :)

maybe your suffering from a similar effect
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store
Coming Soon Lots planned for the near future nowt for the immediate :(

where did you get the stainless tap? I'm looking online for something similar.

I got mine from bes:

part no.16829

I made a mistake with the hose tail adapter though, it has a BSPT thread, so doesnt screw all the way into the tap.

Got my bucket drilled yesterday and did a 25 litre batch of stout to try it.

Much easier than the burco style boiler. I even hit my gravity with minimal faff.

looks very similiar to the ec6000 buckets. even the bottom of the bucket does. the wall thickness on my 60ltr bucket from the copper kettle was between 2.5 - 3.00mm

This was about 2mm.

Wish i'd gone this way before intead of splashing out on the tea urn. It's bigger, less chance of a boil over, the boiler had a lip making getting my BIAB bag out hard work.

Worked out about £30 quid all in.
