This is great stuff!....and I concur with andy, you are "the man" DAAB!

DAAB, one point concerning your comments on water. For one of my brews that had this bad off flavour, I used ASDA bottled spring water?? Although I must stress that this was my first brew using steeped grains (black patent), and a lot of these grains "escaped" from the grain bag and ended up in the boil, so the bad taste may have been tannins? (it was the worst of all of them, really strong off flavour).

Anyroad, I think I shall have to get one of those filters.

It was ASDA's own....not that I'm suggesting that Wal Mart are crooks who bottle tap water from Peckham Spring. ;) :D

I do think that a water filter would be a sound investment, but may start by using Campden Tablets....BTW, I thought Campden tablets are used in winemaking for sterilising the water, rather than removing chlorine. Plus, I seem to remember reading somewhere that they shouldn't be used in beer making...but I probably am getting confused here?

I never let the beer spash when transferring and always submerge the hose, and I use light spraymalt to prime as I have found it gives excellent results.

Do you put the tube in your mouth to start the syphon? That could be a problem.

No, I start a siphon using the "sanitiser in the tube" method...but I rarely use them now as I have taps on my fermenters...much easier.

BB, how about the can opener? Is it clean and sterile?

Do you use any aluminium utensils/pans?

QUOTE I used ASDA bottled spring water

So there's no point asking you whether you take your water from the kitchen sink, how old your house is and how hard your water is then?

I don't buy the idea about big secondary fermenters - I use a 6 1/2 gallon one - no problems.

DaaB - re: the speedfit fitting on the water filter cartridge, you mentioned a 3/8" fitting. B&Q do a 10mm speedfit female to 1/2" BSP male connector, do you think that the 10mm fitting would be OK on the filter male connector ??

Surely none of this would matter as I am boiling for over one hour...and the aluminium debate is somewhere I don't think we should go (other forums have suffered from this topic for weeks!) ;)

Well, I think I have "mis-tasted" my last extract brew. That "medicinal twang" has almost disappeared. The beer now tastes quite good. I am wondering if what I was tasting was a "raw" hop bitterness together with the green beer taste. With time it has mellowed.

I'm quite pleased. :beer :pink

It amazes me just how much the flavour of the beer changes in just a couple of weeks.

My keg of DL's Guinness clone is almost empty now, I made that between Xmas & New Year. So it's now been conditioning for 2 1/2 months and it's really good now. Such a shame as it's nearlly all gone :(

My extract brew has been in the keg for just 18 days, so I'm sampling way to early. It's so hard though, it keeps calling out to me! :o
