Hi!

No I haven't but I have thought of halving the volume of water added (12litres)using a Coopers draught kit & some LDME...

I got the idea from the Coopers website:

http://www.coopers.com.au/homebrew/make ... =7&bid=118

Your kits might also work fine... but it looks like it might be strong stuff so you may need to use a yeast starter or re pitch some slurry also to help it ferment...

Does this help?

Hi Sidney!

Just by way of an update....

I did my kit experiment the other night, it went as follows...

1 Coopers Original series draught

500g Light dried malt extract

S-23 yeaqst slurry from my previous coopers lager (a old honey jar full)

I mixed it up in the FV and at 12.5l the OG (20C) was 1056

This was about what I was hoping for and should leave me with a light bock style beer of about 6.2-6.8% abv

I pitched the yeast slurry at 19C and let this drop to 12C overnight, by late morning the following day there was activity!

It is fermenting away very nicely now and there is a small compact head on the top of the beer which is quite a result for a lager yeast!
The airlock is bubling about every 3-4 seconds, I would imagine it will take about two weeks to get to a SG of 1008-1010
I will not bottle until I get two steady readings... I wil then prime the 330 ml bottles and bottle straight from the FV (fitted with tap and bottling stick)

It's relatively common to brew a 5 gallon kit as 4 gallons to boost the flavour and get a bit more strength but brewing 10 gallons of kit as a 5 gallon batch would be way too much I think.

Best kit I ever made up was a 2 can of Geordie Lager with a few additions, including extra hops. I chose it cos it s so lightly hopped, around 18-21 IBU`s I read somewhere.
Its something I`ll definitely brew again, and I never made the full 23 litres either, around 21 if I remember correctly.

you would have to use 2 cans of geordie lager to get any where near a decent brew :D

Hi!

Nice one Sidney! I'm sure your brew will be great...

When I tried the sg sample it did taste malty and hoppy but not excessively bitter....

Using Coopers website as a base for the recipe and their IBU for the cans and calculating accordingly I expect the bitterness of the finished beer to be in the 40-45 IBU range...

Granted this is high for a lager but not what I'd call excessive...

The brew should ferment untill around boxing day and then I guess I'll be able to tell how this experiement will turn out...

Maybe I have made a big error, maybe not :?

I'm not sure what my options are about 'diluting' the brew now anyway so I may as well carry on to the 'bitter' end...

Yeah, I can only guess thats its a load of pish on its own but 2 together and the right yeast and hops and you can turn it into whatever you want more or less. Its a great base for playing around with, especially when its on offer at £4.99. :D

Hi,

just an update on my coopers draught 'experiment'...
I bottle dit last night the FG was 1010 which I think is a fair result after 18 days....

most of the fermentation was at 12C and it slowed right down after 10 days

the SG sample tasted pretty good not too bitter but plenty of malt and hop flavour...

I'll give it at least 4 weeks before trying a sample
