Mini mashing

Post by bitter_dave » Tue Sep 05, 2006 8:22 pm

Ok, I was I admit I was a bit sceptical at first, but I'm thinking about doing some mini-mashing following Daab's excellent http://www.18000feet.com/minimash/page1.htm (where's the brown nosing avator? :P )

I want to play around with the recipe I've been trying to develop for Harveys sussex best, without having to produce 40 pints each time. I'm pretty confident with the equipment Daab suggests as the lauter tun is what I use for a mash tun, only much bigger.

My main question is:
Do I need to do the mashing in the oven? Is there any reason why I couldn't mash in the lauter-tun if it was insulated well (as I do at the present time with my much large mt)?

If your lauter tun is well insulated, I see no reason why you couldn't use it as you do now. For a small amount, the oven is real convenient , but by no means are you limited to just that method.

yes there's a lower cost but surely you will get different results using the same recipe in a mini mash?

Interesting, why would that be the case?
