Brewday at Malvern Hills Brewery 09/10/07

Post by TC2642 » Wed Oct 10, 2007 4:58 pm

Firstly I must give my gratitude and thanks to Steve B. Chris the brewer and Justin the owner (who was layed up in bed due to illness, I think I may have somehow caught it from the way I am feeling today!) at MHB for setting this up for me. I really enjoyed my day here and it has planted the idea of going pro myself at some point in the future. Anyway pictures!

Image

I got there a bit late but helped with the doughing in (notice the sparge arm that Chris fixed to the mash tun)

Image

This is the fermentation room on the second level, the HLT is in the top left hand corner, the rest are fermenters. That brown bin is the fermentation lock.

Image

I helped clear out the old yeast from the FV before Chris got inside and started scrubbing the beerstone from it) There's also a copper coil at the top which is out of shot which helps regulate the temp of the wort during fermentation.

Image

Downstairs again and the start of the sparging.

Image

Heres the copper, Chris said this was rescued from a field somewhere, I think he said it was used to pasturise milk.

Image

Recirculating the first runnings.

Image

This pump has an automatic value on it when the bucket gets full and the pipe then transfers the wort to the copper.

Image

The copper going like hell after the bittering hops have been added (it really clears your head when you go in there!)

Image

Here's Chris cooling down the wort using a cylinder inside another one (sorry don't know the technical name for it) before taking a reading.

Using this hydrometer (I now feel totally vindicated using my cheap hydrometer :D )

Image

Ph reading being taken from wort from the various brewing stages, Chris uses a Ph buffer of 4 and another of 6 or 7 (can't really remember now) before taking a reading.

Image

This is the heat exchanger which is hooked upto a digital thermometer when the worts ready to be transferred to the FV.

Image

Heres the FV filling up, (the wort's being pumped up from downstairs.)

Image

Danstar Nottingham yeast is used (sorry about the quality of the photo).

Image

Rehydrating the yeast.

Image

Finally, Chis pitches in the yeast!

I hope I got all this in order but I may not have. Anyway, I had a great day.

Cheers.

Excellent photos 8) Makes you realise that brewing from home isn't a million miles from micro-brewing.

i always had this impression in my mind that micro breweries were clean as hospitals and full of shiney s.s.
it just goes to show why so many people fail in small business set ups. That brewery is totaly hands on with no unnecessary frills. I bet he turned a profit very early on after setting up. great pics TC, an eye opener for me.

Great post, echo the cleanliness sentiments. Could do with a once-over that place. It does suggest how resilient the brewing process is though, eg. open topped yeast rehydration!

The brewery has won several CAMRA awards and the beer has always been tip-top (one of the best pints I ever had was one of their Swedish Nightingales in the Bell down the road from me). There was a lot of cleaning involved and Chris did keep clean what matters, plus he did shut the door when the yeast was being rehydrated :D. The electricity went off a few times due to water leakage (was p*ssing down that day), and the sparge arm stopped working due to a kink in one of the pipes upstairs, the SG was dead on when he finished though and I think it shows his skill as a brewer to be able to adapt to the circumstances. They are doing very well and adding a new fermenter to the brewery to keep up with demand. I learnt a lot in one day.

As I looked through the pics that's exactly what I thought. I'm now extremely proud of the cleanliness of my brewery....I own a mop you see.

Most breweries I've been in are a lot cleaner. A lot.
