First AG

Post by Western Brewer » Thu Aug 03, 2006 10:14 am

Hi all,
Planning to do my first AG (Daab's Summer Lightning) on Sunday but have at least two questions.
When doing the mash is there any particular ratio of water to grain. If so what should it be? And U take it the the late copper hops go in around 15 mins prior to the end of the boil?
Answers on a post card to.....
Regards, Mark

Hi WB,

If you want a less fermentable wort, use a ratio of near 2 litres per kilo. If you want a more fermentable, drier wort use closer to 3 litres per kilo. A good compromise is 2.7 L/kg which will give you a balance. I've never tried summer lightning so I don't know how dry it is.

Aye, late hops go in 15 minutes before the end, assuming you want to extract flavour from them. If you want aroma you could add more at 2 minutes or even just steep them after the boil.

:o no wonder mine are dry. I normally just chuck in 15 litres of water. My latest brew had less than 3.5kg giving a ratio of 4.5 l per kg
