Yeast is yeast?

Is there a huge difference between brewing yeast and bread making yeast?

(ummm, not that i've gone and added a bit of bread yeast to get it going or anything..)

Seems to have done the trick though....just hoping it won't affect it.
Anyone know?

nee, there's an interesting experiment carried out here:

It's number six on the list, 'Trading Places: Beer and Bread Yeast'. The beer made from bread yeast apparently turned out quite drinkable.

Thanks...I will check the link in the morning (when a bit more sober!)

Basically for my previous 2 brews i have attempted, each time i have had zero action in the airlock....and i mean ZERO! Nothing at all.
The first one tasted a bit rank, but the 2nd (produced in a proper fermenter) was pretty tasty, and quite potent!

On this (my 3rd attempt) i have taken lots of advice gained from this forum, like putting the brewing yeast in 1/3 cup of water etc before adding to the wort etc...but still i left it for 10 hours yet nothing happened at all.....same as all previous attempts. I have added a small sprinkling of bread yeast and magically the thing is now bubbling like mad! Weird.

Hopefully still drinkable! (saying that i'll drink almost anything though!!)

It sounds more like the lid isn't forming a gas tight seal with the bin, so air is escaping via an easier route than the airlock.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

I can confirm the lid is on tight as can be, checked that so many times now.

It's possible that the yeast you first pitched was on its last legs, and there wasn't enough healthy cells in the sachet to get the fermentation started in a sensible time span.

Next time you buy your kits, you might want to think about getting a few extra sachets of yeast to keep in store for times like that. Something reliable like Fermentis' S-04.

Yey! - you may notice a yeasty smell, and the yeast deposit will be less stable, but it'll be perfectly drinkable. 8)
