I'll be brewing this one this evening, grains weighed out already 8) to try to cut down the length of the brewday i'll be doing a 60 min mash and 60 min boil. I'm happy that the 60 min boil shouldn't be a problem but do I need to up the grain bill at all to accomodate for a shorter mash time, will there be a drop in efficiency?

Brewlength - 25L
Target OG - 1.046 (based on 75% BHE)
EBU ~30
60 min 69 degree mash
60 min boil

4600gm Pale Malt, Maris Otter (3.0 SRM) Grain 83.33 % (Edit was 4100g)
240gm Amber Malt (22.0 SRM) Grain 4.88 %
240gm Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (60.0 SRM) Grain 4.88 %
240gm Wheat, Torrified (1.7 SRM) Grain 4.88 %
100gm Chocolate Malt (450.0 SRM) Grain 2.03 %
50gm Fuggles [5.50 %] (60 min) Hops 25.3 IBU
20gm Fuggles [5.50 %] (15 min) Hops 5.0 IBU

Can't say that I notice much, if any change in efficiency when I do 60 minute mashes Wez, I don't work out a figure as such but the gravity is plenty high enough after collecting my pre-boil volume.

Have a good one, looking forward to the pics :D

If your PH is in range that should help get the extraction up to the mark.
Have a good 'un.

I'd up the grain bill a bit to be on the safe side, why take the chance for a quid or so more.
Good luck with it wez.

I have no probs with a 60 minute mash, especially since the mash temp is so high. As delboy says a couple of extra handfulls of base grain never hurts things. I usually make more wort than I need and save a few litres and freeze it for starters.

I've only got about 11 AG brews under my belt but I've noticed that my efficiency does drop when I reduce the mash time.

My early brews were 2hr mashes and the most efficient . I'm going to return to the 2hr mash for my next batch for sure. To be on the safe side I'd increase the grain bill for your 1hr mash. Have fun 8)

Right, to be on the safe side I've upped the pale malt by 500g to 4600g (left the other grains as they were)

My normal efficiency is 75% that would mean an OG of 1.051 (~4.9%)from this grain bill. 70% would be 1.047 (~4.6%) 65% would be 1.044 (~4.2%) and 60% would be 1.041 (~3.9%) i'd be happy with all of those so we'll see what happens. Of course I can always just dilute down to whatever gravity I want :) It's a useful experiment.

Right I'm heating the mash liquor right now :D

(Best get cracking before the Mrs comes home, I'm supposed to be stripping tiles off the bathroom walls :wall)
