First taste - Deuchars clone

Post by stevezx7r » Thu Mar 27, 2008 5:48 pm

Just a wee snifter of my Deuchars clone and it's definately on it's way to being excellent!

Aroma is great with a strong citrus/piney scent to it. Taste is good too with a strong grapefruit taste and a definate peppery taste too.

After taste is slightly dry with the pepper lingering, it makes you want more, not yet a thirst quencher.

As it's not been in the barrel two days yet it has loads of promise.

It looks like the 100g Aurora was a good choice

Now I have to leave it alone 'till the 12th April...Yeah, right.

nice one Steve, Deuchars is a great drink.

I think I'll be doing this on Saturday, got some Aurora from H&G earlier this week.

That's good to hear, this one's definately on my to-do list.

One thing I notice in the original is a pronounced 'grainy' taste. I'm thinking this comes from the use of golden promise & optic rather than maris otter, could you pick this up in your sample Steve ?

Not sure about grainy but that could be the peppery taste I noticed - I guess it may change over time into a more earthy taste, which would definately suit it more than pepper.

The missus is going to pop over to asda to pick up a bottle for me to sample, just to check my findings you understand

After trying the bottled version of Deuchars IPA I am left feeling dissapointed.

On opening the bottle I expected to be hit with the styrian aroma but no such luck. Instead it had a slight soapy smell, more akin to EK goldings. The taste was also a let down, no where near the taste I remember which had a definate citrusy almost fizzy taste. This has a far less powerful taste while still retaining the fizzy mouthfeel.

It does retain a head with a very tight, constant array of bubbles forming on top so I assume it has some sort of wheat in it as it covers the whole top layer of beer even half way down the glass and clings to the side well.

The colour is darker than mine, maybe 20% darker, a more amber colour whereas mine is more diluted looking.

It should be noted that the bottled version is 4.4 ABV (and I can taste it) where the draught version is around 3.5+% iirc. I remember the pint I had on draught was so drinkable it was almost pop like.

As mine won't be anywhere near ready for at least another week I can't offer a proper side by side opinion of both so once mine is ready i'll take a few pics and post them hear somewhere for comparison.

To sum up, I think I had better try it in draught form just to make sure what I remember is correct.

I wonder if they'll let me take a pint of mine into the pub, for research purposes m'landlord

As a final note, I am not a trained beer taster, I can only report on what I feel at the time of drinking so don't let me put anyone off from trying this beer.

You're right, bottled Deuchars is extremely disappointing. The Caledonian 80/- bottled is very good though and worth a try. Good cask Deuchars is near impossible to find in Glasgow and theres only a few places in Edinburgh (where it is made) that serve it well.

I don't think Deuchars is half the pint it was in years gone past. The hop aroma is stale in comparison. I had some in the Bow Bar on Victoria Street in Edinburgh a couple of months back and it was just rubbish. :(

I would love to be able to brew a Deuchars or Caly 80 clone. Just two of my favourite beers.

I take it that was the draught version, calum? If it was I'm surprised as the one I had in the Market Tavern (Durham) had a very strong taste/arome. That's what made me try and copy it!

Bow bar, is that the one on the way down to the Grassmarket? Cloisters on Brougham street near the meadows does a good Deuchars and TTL, infact all their cask beers are always spot on.
