V1 Brewery.....Back Int Saddle

Tomorrow see's the return of the V1 brewery after being laid off since 18/11 07....far too long.

The first brew was going to be a Phils Hefe due to it's quick drinkability, but I've changed my mind...that, and the fact that it should spurn me to do a Hefe in double quick time after this brew :roll: :lol: ....maybe even the same day :shock:

So, the first brew...Back Int Saddle aka Market Best Bitter from M Ollossons book.

The recipe has been scaled down from 75% efficiency to 70% efficiency regards malt and a hop utilization figure of 25% has been used...so

Original gravity 1040
Final gravity 1009 (est)
Alc 4%
IBU 38
Final volume 60 ltrs
Mash temp 65 deg c
Mash time 90 min
Boil time 90 min (reduced from original 2 hrs)

In the tun

Marris Otter 11.99kg
Crystal 120 0.64kg
15g Gypsum
9g CaCl2
2g MgSo4
Ph 5.2 addition to be inserted if required...will check with Ph test strips.

Mash at 65 deg c for 90 min

Haven't decided whether to fly or batch sparge yet :roll:

In the copper (90 minute boil)

15g Gypsum
9g CaCl2
1g MgSo4
Styrian Golding 3% 304g 90 minutes
Whirlfloc 1 tablet last 15 minutes of boil
Styrian Golding 100g at 80 deg c for 15 min (upped 33% roughly from original recipe)

Yeast SO4 x 3 11g packs

The new brewery

Everything has been changed or upsized, but it was all tested on the old system and this is the set up that I hope to be able to pass on to someone when I pop my clogs :lol:
Any faults on the old system were identified and eradicated on this set up....as Mr constructor...I may get bored and have to make some more for sale :lol: ...though not just yet...had quite enough during the past 5 months :roll:

It's had a brief trial run...lets hope it produces some good beer.

I will go for a stainless table...when I can find one fitted with castors.

The 3 pids (temp read outs) on the control box allow me to measure the return temp in the return manifold exiting the heat exchanger, the temp of the liquor in the hlt, and the third uses a non fixed 25mm x 6mm PT100 and this allows me to take the temp of the mash post dough in, and the temp of the heat exchanger prior to recirc to match temps and measure the temp of the wort exiting the cfc.

It does doesn't it...but I know the differences and the few hundred quid they cost :lol: :lol:
Are you sure those castors are going to be up to the weight of all that water and grain?
They're rated at 250kg....they don't concern me...what does is the movement sideways if you knock the set up hard :shock: :lol:
I had it in the garden with all 3 pots full = 280kg fill volume + everything else....no problems...even pushed it about...still no problems 8)

I'll never have more than 2 pots full so it wil be o.k :wink:

Vossy, I forgive the nasty things you said about Essex people. Your new brewery set-up looks the dogs gonads and am very envious, as will be the rest of JBKHF.
Hope your inaugural brew goes smoothly.
I would have altered the ratio of hops between start of boil and steeping.
Say about 100g at the start and 300g for steeping, but that's just me. Try the MO recipe with the upped steeping hops and give the "Essex" version a go later.

BTW there is a third castor in the centre middle of the base which can't be seen on the photo.

The only thing to forgive was my sense of humour and I'm afraid I'm stuck with that :lol: For all it matters you could have come from Timbucktoo (sp)...you'd have got the same response :lol: :oops:

Looks superb. If it were mine it would be on a tubular steel trolley down the end of the garden, but then I wouldn't get away with a 100L brewery as living room furniture.

Seriously though, I'm very, very envious of your stainless brewing bling.

Mine will be soon :cry: ...in the garage...in the dark...no place for shiny IMO
It was only in the living room whilst MrsV1 tolerated it and whilst she didn't have to give me a hand bringing it from the garage :lol:

At least it would save making any marks in your wood(ette) floor which could result in hearing damage
No brewing in the front room unfortunately DaaB....forced into the barren wastelands that is the kitchen with a solid tiled floor :lol:

Mrs V1 even suggested extension leads and the garage the other day :shock:

To save me mopping the kitchen ceiling every 5 mins during a brew :lol:
