Brewday 25/04/07 - Wez's Big Kenny

Post by mysterio » Fri Apr 25, 2008 11:09 am

Having a go at this one today, unless you have any suggestions Wez about a definitive version i'm going to go roughly with this formulation : viewtopic.php?t=8597

All i'm doing is changing the bittering hop from Fuggle to NZ Hallertau... so here it is tweaked to my brewlength. Also these Styrian Goldings are Bobeks... I used the original Styrians a lot and they're my favourite hop so i'll be disappointed if they're not similar! Anyone have any thoughts on that?

Hope it goes well Mysty 8)

I'd be interested to see how the Hallertauer and Bobek work, how about a bottle swap?

Cheers guys. My water supply seems to have a slightly murky hue to it today... :? Not noticeable in the glass but it is when in volume. Seems to taste alright. Ah well it all gets boiled anyway... still want that bottle Wez?

Actually the water has a brownish tinge to it in the HLT, tempted just to abandon this batch... :? What does everyone think?

I couldnt go through with it, not a full batch anyway. I couldn't just chuck all that grain though - I decided to take the 7L of the first runnings, and i'm currently boiling it on the cooker with some black treacle and hops. I'll dilute that down to 1.090 ish and make 2 gallons of Old Ale :D

Water that has come from the highlands can have a brownish tint due to being filtered through peat. The last time I was in Fort William it was distinctly "light tan". The water company may have changed source. I would work on the tried and true rule of if it tastes fine, it will be fine.

They're digging up the road around here - apparantly that could be it. I can't quite figure out why that would taint the water supply but everyone i've mentioned it too asked if they were digging up the roads nearby.

Still, 2 gallons of 1.090 Old Ale.

How long do you cellar your old ales for Mysty?
