Finings in cornie keg?

Post by Parva » Wed Aug 27, 2008 9:35 am

I've got one cornie keg full of Muntons Gold IPA and another with a fairly simple AG brew in. Both taste fantastic but both are cloudy. :( Well, I'd describe the AG as more hazy than cloudy but the lager is definitely gonna be a good laxative.

My biggest problem is not having sufficient cooling for them and having to rely on an an ice bath prior to drinking, I'm sure if I could keep them at a constant low temperature I'd have less of a problem.

Having had several pints off each and seeing little, if any change in the clarity in either I am contemplating opening the lid and chucking a sachet of finings in each. Once pressured up and purged I can't see how this would be a threat to the beer and the dip-tube is aimed away from the very bottom of the keg.

Is this likely to work or am I asking for trouble?

I've used Isinglass finings in a keg many times. You pull up a couple of pints of sludge first of all then it's usually bright. If you move the keg then you get sludge again.

If you're looking to use Isinglass then I'd avoid the liquid stuff that's sold at the (only) Leeds shop - it's been on the shelf at room temperature for ages and probably won't work too well. Hop and Grape apparently have a high turnover and store it correctly - in the fridge.

I'm guessing you're talking about Abbey? :) I actually bought the stuff from H&G actually. :) Abbey is ok for emergencies but he's pretty expensive I find. The nature of the business and the shop location I expect.

I prefer to use finings outside of the keg, although I usually just fine in the keg. The slightest nudge or blast of gas can often upset the sludge at the bottom, and sometimes the beer is not as clear as it could be. It doesnt work so well in the cheapo 'De Jong' cornie-style kegs I got from ebay because of the design. Try it and see, but you'll probably come to the conclusion that it's best to use these kegs with completely bright beer.

I fine with Gelatin in the corny. Beer drops bright fast.

I fined my last one with KwikClear (Kieselsol & Gelatin 2 part) and it was lovely and clear. I racked it from the FV into 2ndary, then fined it, left it for 2 days in the 2ndary and racked it into the corny. (only 2 days as I was in a rush.....)

Worked a treat!
