Brewday 27/09/08 - Nelson Sauvin Ale

Post by Garth » Fri Sep 26, 2008 7:52 pm

I've got this planned for tomorrow morning,

I have a small amount of Nelson flowers to use up from last time plus 180g of new pellets from Ross at Craftbrewer.

I did a similar recipe last year when the flowers were available more readily in this country and it was a cracking, very different tasting ale.

I've added a bit of crystal for a deeper colour and a bit more body

I would welcome your comments, am I going overboard with the late additions?

I want it as hoppy as possible without being too bitter.

Bongo, 'tis a gorgeous tasting hop, and just like the name suggests, it gives a rich white wine taste, very unusual

not particulary 'green' of me to order from Oz but I just had to have some and there dosen't seem to be any about round here at the moment. I got lots of other ones also that aren't easily available here. Just gotta find recipes to use them in.

Plus the service from Ross (he's on here) at Craftbrewer was top notch, took less than a week to get here. Well recommended :D

Well it won't be very bitter with an BU:GU rato of less than 0.5 . . . in fact it won't be very balanced at all really. I'd probably go for one late addition of 120g at 15 minutes . . . which would give you more bittering but with masses of flavour as well, the 60g as a steep should give you plenty of aroma

Have a great brewday Garth!

Out of interest, where do you order your NZ hops from? I quite fancy brewing some organic beer (yeah... I know...this month's BYO) and am being drawn towards the NZ Pacific Gem

the postage isn't excessive but I'd get a few things to make it worthwhile

I got six different hops and it worked out as cheap per gram as buying in the UK even with the postage added in.

I was tired . . and missed the 7 IBU from the 5 minute addition . . . which I still think won't make a massive difference and is better moved to the 15 minute addition

thanks Tony, I've gone with the 120g at 15 and 60g at flame out

these pellets are '06 crop but on openin the packets they is a mega strong aroma and they are sooo sticky, can't wait to drink the ale.
