O.K. We have established here, that there are quite a few formulae’s for working out the A.B.V. and there are also quite a few beer calculators available online too, all of these giving a possible different result.
So what we need to know now is there anybody here that can point us to a reliable and a quite accurate formulae or calculator to work out the abv of our brew?

I thought that I had sussed it, but using the available formulae’s and calculators I am coming up with different results each time.

Does any one know the way, there's got to be a way..tooo BLockbusterrrrrrrrrrrrr.. (sorry about that but this thing is getting t me know)

I would trust the formula used by HMRC. There's a link to it somewhere on the forum, but I can't remember where it is.

EDIT: Here it is.

This is why I don't bother with the Hydrometer much. I make beer. I drink it. It's nice. I don't care what you say. What he says. What a raft of sites and head ache causing calculations say. I just enjoy my beer :)

Isn't enjoyment what we're in it for?

Want to get completely smashed? Chug down a bottle of 'White Cider' before hitting the HB. Then keep a bottle of whiskey to hand, as a liquid Coup de Grace, should it become necessary. That way ye get to enjoy some fantastic flavours (once the battery acid's out of the way) and appreciate ye HB. And ye still wake up in ye chair, or on the floor close by!

If I just wanted to get pissed cheaply I'd buy a bottle of Windolene.

have to agree with you fellows.
theres always cheap ways of getting pist, but surely the majority of us are enjoying making our own brews and taking pride in the beer we make.
and if it gets you merry in the process then thats a bargain. :D

Thanks Jim, I think I’ll stick with that one in future

To be honest Ditch, I don’t use the Hydrometer on a kit that I’ve made before,(only to check if its ready for bottling) but if i’m making a different kit I use one, as I think it is nice to know the readings as you can adjust if necessary.

Like you if my brew tastes good I stick with it and make it the same again next time.
By the way It’s not very often I go for “Completely Smashed” state these days, I just aim for “Comfortably Numb”
