SW's Stunning Runner 15-02-09

Post by spearmint-wino » Sun Feb 15, 2009 12:52 pm

Wahey, first brew of the year, boy I've missed this.

I need beer fast and I've loads of old ingredients to use up so there's going to be some interesting quick n' dirty brews coming out of South London over the next few weeks ;)

Today's is a take on the old forum favourite Styrian Stunner. Remember those days? Pre-hop shortage and all that, EVERYONE was brewing styrian stunner... :)

Stunning Runner

25l, OG 1043

4400g Maris Otter Pale Malt
220g Wheat Malt
100g Light Crystal Malt

Challenger 6.1% - 39g @ 60min
Styrian Goldings 3.1% - 25g @ 60min
Styrian Goldings 3.1% - 30g @ 10min
Styrian Goldings 3.1% - 50g @ flameout / 80°c
Styrian Goldings 3.1% - 15g dry-hopped after primary fermentation

Safale S-04 with a DaaB's flying starter

Thanks! The yeast head has been collecting on the surface for a couple of hours now so it looks like DaaB's flying starter is doing its thing. SWMBO has already commented on how hoppy it is smelling in the general vicinity of the fermenter so I guess that hefty hop-bill worked out too

I did a styrian stunner a while back (like you said - who didn't?), and it was nice but needed a fairly long conditioning for the styrian character to come through over the hoppy harshness. And mine was less hoppy than yours... It may not be the immediate answer to your low stocks...

Hehe Tom, you don't know how young I normally drink my beers... ;)
Going well up in 'Embra'?

Yeah, I'm like that too - I try to brew enough that I can leave new beers for a few weeks at least and still have older stuff to drink. I do find that by the time my beers get really good I only have a bottle or two left...

Yeah, its going well up here cheers. Still not learning anything about brewing, but I have managed to get 7 AGs done since I've been back. Havn't been to a Scottish Craft Brewers meeting yet - theres one on Weds though so I might make that one.

I'll be back next month for the London Drinker Beer Fest, possibly to work at it - how about organising a LAB trip to it (if there isn't one planned already)?

This has been in the keg for 2 weeks now so that's enough time to warrant cracking it open ;).

Thought I'd follow up on the recipe if anyone was interested.
Although it finished a little higher than expected (1.015ish) it actually works ok as the the BU:GU ratio was pretty high so the bitterness counteracts the sweetness. What it does have is bags of hop flavour and aroma (suprise...) and is actually a pretty decent hoppy and bitter session beer, not at all dissimilar to a 'modern' TTL. I reckon I'll do another sometime as it drinks really quickly, I reckon it would have been good to go as early as 5 days ago or so.
