geordie mild

Post by elphias » Wed Sep 09, 2009 9:29 am

just a quick question
i'm fermenting a batch of this at the moment, I think i've read on here about people adding black treacle to the mild kits. Should this have gone in at start of fermenting or could i use it in a keg instead of priming sugars and if so how much

Yes and yes ;)

Either works but you may find the overpowering flavour of the black treacle works best in the primary as some of the flavours will be driven off by the vigorous fermentation, using a small amount in the keg for priming will also have a similar after taste but getting the quantities right for you will be trial and error.

in dave lines book bbltyb he primes his old peculiar recipe with 100 grams of black treacle, i seem to remember doing it when i first did homwbrew in the 90s and it being a cracking pint =P~

not so sure about in a mild tho.

OMG :D :D :D :D just drew a pint of this from the keg very very pleased with the result, nothing to compare this with as its my first mild kit but lets say it reminded me of a mansfield mild. The treacle just coming through in taste not as strong as i thought it might be, off on monday for another kit

Err...the instructions day say anyfink about testing the SG before pitching the yeast  Wish i had a done now, but hindsight is a wonderful thing! I now have a few good days reasearch behind me and am considering AG rather seriously so will be defo taking more care next time! Me mate was in such a rush(we are brewing the kits together) so i didnt even think about it!
