Pitching Yeast

Post by Hoppkins » Fri Jan 05, 2007 10:47 am

If yeast is to be pitched onto the surface of the aerated wort is it wise to stir it into the mix also?

I usually do the rehydrate thing sorry, got my wording wrong :)

One last questrion Daab. Those beer enhancer packs, would that do as a decent base for a yeast starter? Might buy a pack and keep in a jar just for yeast starters.

I rehydrate first thing I do when brewing, with a little dry malt and cool boiled water.

At the end of the session when ready for pitching the yeast has had 3 hours+ and is bubbling away nicely.

Why not use glucose, available from any chemist...that's what I use

Great idea, how much glucose would you add to the yeast/water mix?

I usually add 2 teaspoons to 3/4 of a cup of water, b4 zapping it in the microwave and allowing it to cool b4 adding the yeast

I do use my microwave for something.... that's another thread

I've never had a problem with my yeast by doing this and usually have to stir it to stop it from escaping out of the cup

I've also never had a stuck ferment

Forgot to add that,

That's probably due to following DaaB's and other members excellent advise on the forum and with experience adding a little Vossy magic  8)

Given the tools i have at the moment im just going to have to rehydrate the yeast.

I plan on making an order to Hop and Grape soon to get some:

Safeale yeast
Spray Malt (both for adding to beer and for making starters)
Other random treats and gubbins

Thanks all for the replies :)
