adding 10 litres at a time to the new one to calibrate it and then checking dead space (1 litre not bad)

I'm liking the element back nuts, what are they stainless or ally and where did you get 'em?

That looks excellent. Very careful choice of quality parts for it too, top stuff.

That is exactly how mine should look, but doesn't. I never did manage to tidy up the scary looking wires hanging out of the back! Well done sir.

Are they Backer Electric elements? (E.g. http://www.backerelectric.com/kettlejug ... efault.asp) I'm thinking about upgrading as one of my cheapo Tesco elements cut out in the last brewday and they're a pain to clean.

Its probably because 2.4kw (10A) is the max in the spec for the modern IEC kettle leads. There are also similar looking 3kw elements available from the heating element company (and no doubt elsewhere) but they need the older round type of kettle plug (or other leads that exceed the spec) which are rarer and more costly. Its personal choice, both types of element are great and there's nothing wrong with either, but I wouldn't be concerned about the slightly lower power; with 2-elements in a boiler that size the difference is small.
