Ah - thanks Des, hadn't considered that. Presumably I will have to be ready to adjust the mash temp when adding this as otherwise it will drop significantly.

Looks like we'll be brewing it at the same time MD :wink:

temp probably wont drop that much.
but yeah just in case have a kettle of boiling water handy
i use this technique to get all my darker beers as i dont like too much astringency

I dump dark grains in at the beginning of the mash but don't pick up any astringency. Then again I do seem to have magic water :D

Talking of water Tribs, we are presumably both on the same supply (North West Water) which is soft but what treatment do you do to yours? I'm thinking I should treat it (first time other than Campden tablets) on my next brew and see what the difference is.

Right final recipe (stuff ordered from H&G and will pick some up from Stockport shop too):

Brew length 19 litre based on 85% efficiency
3900 gm Pale Malt, Maris Otter (3.0 SRM)
136 gm Caramel/Crystal Malt - 80L (80.0 SRM)
91 gm Cara-Pils/Dextrine (2.0 SRM)
65 gm Black (Patent) Malt (500.0 SRM)
60 gm Chocolate Malt (450.0 SRM)
23 gm Progress [7.00%] (90 min) Hops 21.1 IBU
21 gm Styrian Goldings [5.00%] (15 min) Hops 6.1 IBU
15 gm Styrian Goldings [5.00%] (2 min) Hops 0.8 IBU
5 gm Irish Moss (Boil 15.0 min) Misc
SafAle English Ale (DCL Yeast #S-04)

Mash 90 mins in 10.5 litres at 66C
Boil 90 mins

Expected: OG =1.059 FG =1.015 SRM = 17.5 IBU = 28.1

They are fuggles, albeit grown in Slovenia. Genetically identical to the fuggles fuggles.

I made a clone of HG a month back, even before tasting one. Turned out nice and malty, so I went and bought one to compare. Mine actually tasted better. Biased I guess.

And so it should.

I think my beers are better than 90% of the real ales I buy.
I guess that's got a lot to do with the fact I brew to my taste.

Thanks. I used Orfys recipie (or at least I think it was)

11 pounds pale english malt
1/2 pound carapils
.1 pound black patent
.02 pound chocolate malt

Mash @ 150f for 60 minutes

1.6 oz fuggles @ 4.5AA....60
.48 oz willamette @ 5.1 AA....15
.48 oz willamette @ 5.1 AA....2

fermented with S-04
1 week primary
1 week secondary

Bottled with 3/4 cup corn sugar for primming

(Estimate: 1.056 SG)
(Estimate: 23.00 L)

4.80 kg Marris Otter Pale (2 Row) UK (3.0 SRM)
0.25 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (60.0 SRM)
0.20 kg Cara-Pils/Dextrine (2.0 SRM)
0.15 kg Chocolate Malt (450.0 SRM)

15.00 gm Styrian Goldings [5.00%] (60 min) (First Wort Hop)
15.00 gm Fuggles [4.50%] (60 min) (First Wort Hop)
15.00 gm Styrian Goldings [5.00%] (30 min)
15.00 gm Fuggles [4.50%] (30 min)
15.00 gm Fuggles [4.50%] (60 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep)
15.00 gm Styrian Goldings [5.00%] (60 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep)

90 minute mash
60 minute boil

Depending how it comes out I may drop the choclate a little and add a little black.

I too have recently become a fan. A pub at Flore had some Hobgoblin on cask and it was a-mazing, fresh fruity & a bit toffee. I thought the bottled stuff was good. Love the fact we've got the usual can of worms constructing a recipe :)

I used to think Hobgoblin was okay (here in the States) they I tried it in the Cask! We both enjoyed it. My wife loves it.

You guys are giving me to many beers to brew (not that I mind).

Ah man :cry: i've got to get into this ag brewing and make a hobgoblin clone. I love that stuff and you can't buy it in Ireland as far as i know. It's my second fav after chimay blue
