American Brown Ale (critique?)

Post by Gold » Thu Jun 07, 2012 4:34 pm

Hi there, looking to use up what's left in the cupboard and came up with this, any thoughts? Looking for something easy drinking and hoppy.

Batch Size 14L
Target OG 1.047
Target FG 1.013
37.3 IBU, 38° EBC

88% 2.500g Pale Malt (Maris Otter) 80%
9% 0.260g Crystal 60L 73% 99
3% 0.075g Chocolate Malt 73% 785
1% 0.020g Black Malt 60% 909

boil 60 mins 5g Columbus leaf 16.7
boil 15 mins 15g Columbus leaf 16.7
boil 1 min 15g Cascade leaf 8.1
dry hop 7 days 20g Cascade leaf 8.1

Safale US-05

Thanks for any help.

Well us yanks would likely bump the gravity a bit, maybe 1.055 or so but your recipe should be good, enjoy your beer.
Drinking:Saison (in bottles), Belgian Dubbel (in bottles), Oud Bruin (in bottles), Olde Ale (in bottles),
Abbey Triple (in bottles), Munich Helles, Best Bitter (TT Landlord clone), English IPA
Conditioning: Traditional bock bier, CAP
Fermenting: Munich Dunkel
Next up: Bitter (London Pride like), ESB
So many beers to make, so little time (and cold storage space)

I made a brown at 4.3% and it tastes lovely :) http://pdtnc.wordpress.com/2012/03/11/a ... wn-sticky/

I'd expect yours to be a pretty dark Brown.

It seems to be fermenting away nicely (touch wood), wort was a lovely colour. Went for increased late hops in place of dry hopping. Will update in a few weeks. :)

Just to update this - bottled but still needs a bit more conditioning. Decided to omit the dry hopping and just go for increased late hops (15min 15g columbus, 10min 15g cascade, 0min 20g cascade) and it's tasting good. Would probably omit the black malt next time but it's still good. Brewed an IPA with the same (but more) hops and it makes an interesting comparison. :)
