EKG Wherry

Post by Monkeybrew » Tue Jan 01, 2013 9:40 pm

It's been two years to the day that I started brewing, so I decided to 're-brew a Wherry which was my first ever brew.

I have tweaked it slightly by brewing short to 21L and I have also steeped 25g of East Kent Goldings hop pellets for 30mins to make a hop tea addition.

Once I'd emptied the malt extract into my FV, I filled both tins with boiling water and added roughly half of the hop pellets to each tin and then covered them both with clingfilm and left to steep for 30mins.

I then just filtered both tins of the EKG hop tea into my FV by pouring them through a sanitised collinder lined with a piece of voile that had been boiled for 10mins.

I checked the gravity at 21L (22C) and it was 1.040, and I then pitched the kit yeast dry and will ferment @20C in my Brewfridge. I also plan to dry hop with another 25g of EKG pellets once primary is over.

Sounds delicious. Really can't go wrong with that combo.

Yep, that's what I think too.

I was gonna use Celeia but changed my mind as I may need them for my first full AG brew later this year ;-)

As it's now day 9 for my Wherry, I have taken the first gravity reading and it's looking relatively clear at 1.012.

I have added the 25g EKG dry hop addition and will leave that in for 5 days before I plan to rack into a clean FV on Monday night.

Me and SWMBO shared the trial jar and both gave it the thumbs up so far :-)

I was just wondering what to do to add to a Wherry Real Ale kit I bought, and this looks like a good thing to try. Cheers :)

I've racked the Wherry into a clean FV tonight on day 14 and checked the gravity again. It really got my attention because it was showing 1.008 with my hydrometer which seemed too low, so I checked it in 20C water and found that it's reading 0.998.

This means that my OG was 1.042 (not 1.040) and is currently sitting at a true 1.010 :-)

Gotta hate these crappy Wherry kits that constantly stick at 1.020 ;-)

My Wherry keg and bottles have been in the warm for 5 days, so I drew a half pint from the keg to check for carbonation ;-)

Let's just say that I'd happily drink the lot now!

It's practically clear too.

I have done loads of wherry kits in the past, I still do the odd one every now and again even though I mostly do AG, I have never had one stick :D I will definitely be trying this mod although I will use some ekg hops I have in the freezer instead of pellets.
