2nd AG Brewday 22/05/07 Donnington SBA

Post by roger the dog » Wed May 23, 2007 12:05 am

OK, after a fairly painless first brew (beginners luck  ) I've gone for this one from BYOBRAAH by Wheeler & Protz, another fairly simple recipe & I've got the ingredients already.

3.65 kg M.O. Pale Malt
0.210 kg Crystal Malt
0.430 kg White Sugar

85 gms Fuggles Start of boil
15 gms Fuggles 15 mins. from end of boil

1 Whirlfloc tablet 15 mins. from end of boil

Safale S04

I know I might regret the sugar addition but I want to follow the recipe as published to give me an idea on how to tackle some of the others in the book.

Anyway, the day was a good deal less stressful than the last time but still took all of 9 hours from start to finish - an hour quicker !

Some piccies:-

Now time for the bl**dy clean up & floor mopping

I added 1 gramme less sugar than specified & I believe that allows me to name the brew :) so I'm going to call it 'Airbus Ale' in honour of the big-ugly-wing-carrying-guppy-plane that flew right past the garage door (+/- 3000ft) on it's decent into Broughton whilst the boil was on :=P

Excellent pics

My brewdays started at 10 hours or so, my last was 5.5 hours and I have done a two brew day in 7 hours. I find I get slightly more organised every time I do it. Will be even better when I have two boilers at the moment I have one doing two jobs.

So its not just me that gets wort on the dishwasher and the cupboards!!
Fermenter(s): Lambic, Wheat beer, Amrillo/Cascade Beer
Cornys: Hobgoblin clone, Four Shades Stout, Wheat Beer, Amarillo/Cascade Ale, Apple Wine, Cider, Damson Wine, Ginger Beer

Im amazed at what passes for a 'home bodged' manifold in rogers house, that looks more professional than my H&G manifold.

Like your idea of using the brewing spoon for extra aeration, simple but effective.

Great going Rog!

Your manifold is fantastic. I've never seen slots cut into copper pipe with such precision...
... apart from the one at the bottom-right which just ruins the whole thing! :D

Excellent brew day and excellent pics! I covet the 2nd element in your LHB boiler.

Looks good.

BTW, it looks like you have the same sort of boiler tap as me (bit vague in the picture). How did you fit the copper pipe filter on there? I'm trying to work out how to do something similar with mine...

I have the same too.
Not tried this yet, but you have to use a 15mm drill to widen the tap. Might need a couple
of days off the beer to ensure steady hands, cos that'll make the walls very thin indeed.

Barry, I ordered the filter & the boiler at the same time so it already fitted into the back of the tap. As far as I can tell the tap hasn't been drilled although Joe at Leyland HB would be the man to ask.

Agreed ! I reckon that must have been the last one I cut, and bear in mind this was made at about 3 am

 Just to put things into perspective, my first kit brew (Wherry, seems like an age ago now) turned out to be undrinkable & was unceremoniously poured down the drain on Monday to free up the KK for the first AG batch. :?

I still can't believe I forgot the hop filter when I ordered from LHB.
I'm sure Joe would have stepped in, but I ordered so much stuff that day he surely didn't notice.

Half tempted to just order a tap and a hop strainer from him, which is what I'll do if my
tap drilling goes belly-up.

BTW, did you ask for 2 elements, or was that a later addition?

Hmm, think I might try cutting a slot or two into the copper first to see if that makes it fit...

I also have a suspicion that a 15mm to 12mm reducing connector might work here...

Do let me know. I can see myself tearing through the tap's thread, slicing my arm off and killing
my neighbours dog, with my lack of handyman skills.
