tonights brew

Post by ColinKeb » Tue Jun 19, 2007 10:11 am

tonights brew will be a marc ollosson one for a change (sorry dave please forgive me :oops: ) its;

pale malt 4500gm

styrian goldings 135gm (may reduce this to 120gm)
styrian goldings 27g last 15 minutes

2 hour boil (may turn out to be 1 1/2 hours tho)

nice and simple pale ale for my birthday barbecue in a few weeks time. I am worried about the IBU's being about 55  reducing the main hops down to 120gm gives me 50 IBU's which is probably more to my taste. I was going to add a little something like 250 gm demerara to up the strength to about 5% but when i put this into beer smith it comes out at about that anyway so I'll just see what happens as it is.

hopefully this will appease the lager louts as well as the proper men in attendance . :D

What alpha acid are your hops colin? IIRR the styrians used by Marc in his book were quite low, hence the large amount. Personally I would adjust the hop quantities using the formula in his book. Good luck whatever you decide.

my styrians are 3.1 (marc has it at 3.7) so not too much difference . I didnt want to reduce it too much but now youve got me thinking i should be aiming for 40 -45 with a dash of demerara :? say 250 gm

right ive changed the plan

pale malt 4.5kg
demerara sugar 400gm

stryrian goldings 120gm full boil
styrian goldings 30gm last 15 minutes

IBU's at 43 and strength around 5.5%

lets see what happens now :D

in from work by 4 , boiler on and away we go. this recipe looks spookily like the styrian stunner one except more hops . 43 IBUs isnt too bitter is it?

Good luck CK

I also queried the IBU content of these recipe's a while back. Marcs book states a IBU using 135g of 3.7% AA Styrians as 40 Bittering units, but could I get any of the formulas from Beersmith to match...could I bollocks, so I gave up and brewed it as is :D

Very tasty, but quite bitter 8)
