Sugar question.
Sugar question.
Hello,
Im about to keg my youngs bitter kit, was going to do this arvo but discovered I was out of brewing sugar ( AGH ! )
Can I use caster sugar or shall I just make the effort and get some brewing stuff.
Bearing in mind I used brewing sugar in the intial fermentation.
thanks.

Hey Thrasher
Youll probably find that most folk here will try to pursuade you from using sugar especially caster sugar in a cheapo kit as it will taste cidery. Ive just brewed a Geordie lager kit with 1kg dry malt extract instead of 1kg sugar (didnt even use brewers sugar). The malt extract cost me £4 i think. Now i know that nearly doubles the cost of the beer kit £4.99 from wilkos, but ive just tasted it as I racked it over to the keg and it was (for a cheap kit) spot on. Ive also added 10grms of saaz hops to the secondary to dry hop it (cost approx 30pence). Ill let you know in a few weeks how it comes out but it should be pretty tasty. I did use brewers sugar in the recipe but this was only for priming sugars.
Hope this helps
Happy brewing

I started using brewers sugar/glucose. Worked pretty well, but dearer than the old Tate & Lyle. Then I tried all spray malt - well unimpressed: Very difficult to get the gravity down, and ended up with a pissy weak pint. This time - on a really tight budget - I've gone for all Tate & Lyle. Easy-Peasy: gravity dropped like a bomb, and on the initial taste it seemed ok. For getting bladdered at summer barbies, I reckon this cheapo kit'll do me fine.

Cardinal, you should try and get your hands on some corn sugar. My 'local' [*] home brew shop stocks it, and it's only a few pence more expensive than Tate & Lyle. Did two cheap 4.99 Geordie Bitters from Wilkos with it and am very pleased with the results so far!The Cardinal wrote:I've gone for all Tate & Lyle.
