AG#8 - London Porter

Post by Monkeybrew » Tue Sep 09, 2014 5:25 pm

I brewed this a couple of weeks ago and bottled it all up on 1st September.

It's based on GW's Fullers London Porter recipe, but I just used up some of my malts, so some of the amounts are slightly increased. I used some higher alpha First Gold in addition to the fuggles for bittering, as the 100g of 3.6%AA fuggles wouldn't have been enough on their own to achieve 35EBU's.

I was brewing in an evening and was being rushed to get my mash on as dinner was ready, so I doughed in to my strike water that was too hot and ended up with a mash temperature nearer to 68C instead of 66C, and had no time to try and add some cold water!

Anyway the rest of the brew evening/night went ok, apart from the pi$$ing rain that arrived as I was boiling outside my shed! The parasol that I erected over my boiler, failed to stop the driving rain from soaking the socket end of my extension lead reel. Somehow me and my kit survived the incident to tell the tail.

Cheers seymour, it's another brew that hasn't gone quite to plan, but perhaps that's not a bad thing.

:)

I thought that I would update this brew, as I had saved 4 bottles for a little homebrew festival that I put on once a year for a few family and friends.

The little event was on Saturday, and this Porter went down very well indeed!

Just over 10 months in the bottle, has changed the brew a fair bit from how I remember it tasting a few months back, but it was still full of flavour and perhaps more defined.

It was quite fruity on the nose and the first mouthful was also of fruity hops, but I then got a malty chocolate flavour followed by a balanced coffee hit.

As I sat there watching people give it praise I actually felt quite proud that I had brewed it

I'm going to brew something similar for winter 2015, but I am going to swap 1.5kg of the Maris Otter Malt for Weyermann Rauchmalt to give it some subtle smoked flavours.

I may use the same hop combo again, but I'm not completely decided on that part of the recipe yet.

MB,
Did a little tear run down your cheek and MrsMB gently wiped it away while saying `there, there, see, you know you can
do it, now stop snivelling and grow up`! :D

Oddly enough I did a very similar London Porter a couple of months ago. It was 76% Maris Otter, 12% Brown Malt, 7% Dark Crystal and 5% Chocolate, the hops we're First Gold and Progress at 90 and 15 minutes. It was one of the top 3 beers I have made so far, when I brew it again I have some orange peel and coriander seeds to add for a little something extra.
