Yep, fifty quid is the going rate on ebay for a three year supply of filters. Those filters will fit a standard filter housing, so that's also a cheap way of buying filter elements if all you want to remove is sediment and chlorine.
My RO membrane has had two years of brewing and household use. It's performing as well as it was when new (I have a TDS meter).

Yes, I think about two gallons go down the drain for every gallon produced. Not noticed any change to my metered water consumption though.
I ebayed a "permeate pump", which uses the hydraulic energy in the waste water to pump more water through the membrane. It increases water production and is supposed to reduce waste.
