QUOTE (Daft as a Brush @ May 25 2006, 10:22 AM) I like the look of this one http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro ... 4&ts=52699
...cheap, greater through put than the self contained cartridges and the filters are 1/2 the price of my current one (although it doesnt show it it does come with a tap). I'll be buying one instead of replacing my existing filter cartridge in a few months.
thats the one i'm thinking of! :D

From the same seller

Doesn't include the membrane thing though!

Yep, fifty quid is the going rate on ebay for a three year supply of filters. Those filters will fit a standard filter housing, so that's also a cheap way of buying filter elements if all you want to remove is sediment and chlorine.

My RO membrane has had two years of brewing and household use. It's performing as well as it was when new (I have a TDS meter).

Just out of interest johnmac, what TDS meter are you using?

I gather he got the wrong combination of taps recently, flushed the toilet and water started to blow out of the ears of the family pet... :P

It's a "HM DIGITAL", I think it was about £10 from a US seller on ebay. Seems reliable, simple and consistant ( just like me).

Do RO systems use a larger amount of water than they produce ?

i.e is there some saline flushing of the membrane going on resulting in water being used and discarded for that purpose alone ?

Yes, I think about two gallons go down the drain for every gallon produced. Not noticed any change to my metered water consumption though.

I ebayed a "permeate pump", which uses the hydraulic energy in the waste water to pump more water through the membrane. It increases water production and is supposed to reduce waste.
