Lightest malt extract available

Post by allanmb » Wed Mar 04, 2015 11:15 am

I have made quite a few beers now, ranging from fruity pale(ish) session ale to a full-on dark christmas beer, and quite a few in between! The one style I have yet to achieve is something very pale. I usually use coopers light liquid malt extract or generic extra light DME but these have always resulted in around 20EBC according to this chart:

Are there any extracts that would help me achieve something in the 4-8 EBC range? I guess I could make a weak ABV beer, but I want to keep it >4% at the very least, preferably closer to 5%. Or will I have to start looking at a grain mash?

Thanks
Allan

1.8kg Brupaks LME (EBC 4-6, say 5) in 10 litres should give an EBC of around 10 - see here. By my calcs ABV would be around 4.7% with 75% attentuation.

Or add sugar to get the ABV higher. Don't know what it would do for taste though :(

Are you brewing full volume? I found my 1-2 gallon batches darken considerably when boiling due to malliard effect...

The lightest available is probably pilsner DME.
You could substitute rice syrup for some of the regular extract which would lighten the color.
I'm just here for the beer.
