A nice day's brewing

Post by Seveneer » Sat Aug 04, 2007 7:09 pm

I was due to brew a batch of 1850 Whitbread London Porter today as I have just opened the last bottle of my previous batch. It didn't quite go according to plan.

Switched on the HLT at about 10:00 and was joined by Andy and Vic (Alton Bee) at about 10:30.

I'd already made a miscalculation and had 17.5 kg of pale malt crushed rather than the 12 kg my recipe required but didn't notice until we'd started the mash. About 20kg of malt in the mash tun for 10 gallons of 1.060 beer seemed a little over the top. ;)

We ended up producing about 12 gallons of 1.064 wort for a porter then ran the rest off for a mild at about 7 gallons at 1.034.

I had a great time, but then I drank rather a lot  I hope the other guys enjoyed it as much as me.

No pictures I'm afraid as there was too much going on...but we did brew beer... and drank a little while we were at it 8)

/Phil.

Sounds like the best way to brew - with a few mates and beers.

Cracking job - 19galls 8)

now that is how to spend a saturday.
I spent the morning watching my 1 /2 year old nephew - it wasn't as much fun or as productive.

Trying to make up for it now as working my way to boil but a measley 5 american gals . . .

Yup, great day - thanks to Phil for the hospitality and to Vic for giving me a lift to the venue 8)

Phil's got a great setup and as above can produce quite a quantity of beer in one brew :) We also sampled some of his previous beers and I can report them all in fine condition, cheers Phil :D

Well then, I'd say it was a successful day. 8) 1850 London porter sounds very tasty too.

Thanks Phil and Andy for a great day yesterday.

Lovely set-up you have there Phil - Very interesting to see a HERMS in action and with the ability to adapt to brew 2 beers without any real extra work. Just hope they both turn out great -which I'm sure they will.

No problem Andy with giving you a lift - I would of had to drive over there anyway so it made sense.
